LULAC Lambda Awards Scholarships

LULAC Lambda is proud to announce it will award $2,500 education grants to two exceptional students, Gilda Aefre and Marko Sanchez. These scholarships will support their academic and professional aspirations, furthering LULACLambda's commitment to community education and reducing student debt.

"For the past eight years, LULAC Lambda has proudly awarded over $25,000 in scholarships to local LGBTQ+ Latinx students," said LULAC Lambda President Javier Aquino. "We're committed to empowering the next generation of leaders by ensuring they have the financial support needed to complete their studies and avoid burdensome student loans."

Meet the Scholarship Recipients

Marko Sanchez, 20, a junior at George Washington University, is pursuing dual majors in Political Science and Mass Communications. Originally from Franklin Park, Illinois, and now residing in Washington DC, Sanchez aims to become a Creative Director. "The LULAC Lambda Scholarship will support my academic future by easing financial burdens in transitioning to my new job this fall and with long-term professional development," Sanchez said. "LULAC Lambda opens doors to a broad network of Latinx leaders in my field, empowering me to pursue future opportunities." Sanchez is a member of LULAC 11128.

Gilda Aefre, 29, a Washington DC resident originally from Long Island, New York, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, is pursuing a Death Doula Certification. "This scholarship will expand my expertise in trauma-informed care and autonomy to begin my practice as a Death Doula," Aefre said. "My hope is to have an affordable, linguistically accessible, and culturally competent practice for Spanish speakers, so I can support individuals in their departure and provide grief services to their families." Aefre is a member of LULAC 11125.

About the LULAC Lambda Scholarship

Founded in 2014, LULAC Lambda is a local council affiliated with the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the nation's largest and oldest Hispanic civil rights organization. Reflecting LULAC's core mission of promoting education access, LULAC Lambda scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors, current college students, or adults returning to school for a bachelor's, master's, doctoral degree, or professional trade certification. The program is open to LGBTQ+ Latinx individuals residing in or attending a higher education institution in Washington DC.

Special thanks to LULAC 11125 Scholarship Committee Chair Michael Ramirez for coordinating another successful scholarship program. The next application cycle begins in March 2026. For more information, visit www.lulaclambda.org/scholarship
